October 2023 was Farnham Craft Month, and Kiln Photo exhibited a selection of photographs with the brief of ‘Crafting with Light’.

I had been on a recent trip to London with film and digital cameras and decided to produce one of these images from both formats. The result is the diptych shown here before hanging alongside the edited digital image. Creating the two images was surprisingly difficult, and I spent a lot more time than I thought I would to create a black-and-white digital image that stood up to scrutiny compared to the film print. I am still not entirely sure what the point of this was other than to try to show that an image has value regardless of its source and that it’s the capturing of the moment and the enjoyment of crafting with light that matters.

The Moat sits on the north side of Tower Bridge at the back of the Tower of London and is an unexpected enclave of calm amidst the tourists and the looming City beyond.
